Since 2006, the Foundation ICALA (Río Cuarto, Argentina) organices annual conferences on discourse ethics, attended by specialists from Latin America and Europe. Some of these symposia were partially subsidized by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundtion (Bonn, Germany), the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD (Bonn, Germany), the Argentinean National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) and the Fund for Scientific and Technological Research (FONCyT).

In these conferences, questions on grounding and application of moral norms have been discussed from the perspective of discourse ethics, as well as topics related with transcendental and universal pragmatics. Furthermore, there was space for a dialogue came with other ethical theories and interdisciplinary thinking, and for reflection on special topics such as "deliberative democracy" or "ethics and religion."

One of the outcomes of the dialogues in the context of these conferences was the idea of creating an "International Network of Discourse Ethics" with for the purpose to improve of the exchande of information and to promote discussion and international exchange between specialists dealing with the discourse ethics and related topics. The network was founded in the ICALA Foundation in Rio Cuarto, Argentina, on the 4th of November 2011. The Professors Jürgen Habermas and Karl-Otto Apel took over the patronage.

The International Network on discourse ethics (RED) is a scientific association. As such, it is non-profit and independent of political institutions and ideological doctrines. The objectives of the International Network for discourse ethics (RED) are

- to promote the theoretical and practical development of discourse ethics as a counter-weight to the general trend of framing practical questions as technical problems.

- to contribute to democratic deliberation processes by giving voice to the tenets of discourse ethics.

- to encourage critical dialogue between discourse ethics and other ethical-political  intellectual traditions and schools of thought

- to create an academic space for debate and collaboration between academics interested in discourse ethics research and the topics and problems related to it.  This goal will be achieved by various means:

-     the publication of an academic journal;

-     the organization of academic workshops, symposia, conferences etc. on discourse ethics;

-     the publication of research related to discourse ethics;

-     the organization and coordination of national and international research projects;

-     the translation of relevant texts;

-     the publication of an international bibliography in the field of discourse ethics.
